Advantages and disadvantages of JavaScript

The Codest

Jakub Jakubowicz

CTO & Co-Founder

Why is JavaScript (JS) so popular and is widely used by developers? You will find the answer in an article below. We have collected all the pros and cons of JS, which in our opinion are the most important. One can get an impression that we’ve found more advantages to the JavaScript than drawbacks. Check it out by yourself.

Advantages:

  1. A Huge Community: The JavaScript community is extensive, providing ample resources on online forums. Developers can easily find solutions, share JavaScript code, and learn from others’ experiences in web development.

  2. Support from Global Companies: Major companies like Google (creator of the Angular framework) and Facebook (creator of React.js) contribute significantly to JavaScript’s growth, enhancing its capabilities in web applications and browser support.

  3. Rich in Open Source Projects: Open source contributions in JavaScript provide immense support for developers, offering a range of tools and libraries for different web browsers and client-side scripting.

  4. Wide Range of Courses: There are numerous courses available for learning JavaScript, catering to various levels of expertise and focusing on different aspects of web development and JS code.

  5. Dynamic Development: JavaScript’s ongoing evolution is highly valued in the tech community. Despite some criticism, it is more frequently praised for its versatility in creating interactive web pages and client-side applications.

  6. Monopoly in Web Browsers: JavaScript stands unchallenged in web browsers. It is universally understood by browsers, enabling developers to manipulate static web pages and create dynamic client-side experiences.

  7. Low Entry Threshold: JavaScript is an accessible language for beginners, making it a popular choice for those entering the IT sector, particularly in web development.

  8. Popularity: JavaScript’s widespread use in various projects reflects its status as one of the most popular programming languages. This popularity fosters continual growth and innovation.

Disadvantages:

  1. No Static Typing: The absence of static typing in JavaScript can complicate the development of large-scale applications. However, TypeScript offers a solution by overlaying static typing capabilities.

  2. Complex Configuration: Setting up larger front-end projects can be cumbersome due to the numerous tools required to work together, particularly when dealing with libraries and ensuring browser support across different web browsers.

  3. Library Dependencies: Heavy reliance on external libraries can be challenging. Keeping these libraries up-to-date is crucial but often difficult, requiring frequent adjustments to the existing JS code in web applications.
