Why is Ruby on Rails a great technology for product development?

Nuno Barbosa

Sometimes I wonder how much people know about the Ruby programming language and its great Rails framework. When I discuss this technology with others, I often notice that many people have a lot of doubts about Ruby. They are not convinced that it is a good solution for their business. Meanwhile, Ruby and the Rails framework provide a wide range of possibilities for product development. I would like to write a few words about that.

Some facts to begin with

The Ruby programming language gained 12th place in the “Developer Survey Results 2019” ranking published by Stack Overflow. Some time ago I was thinking about how to assess this place. Is it Ruby’s success or not necessarily? After a longer analysis, I came to the conclusion that this year’s Stack Overflow ranking confirms the high stability of this programming language on the market. Let’s face it – Ruby may not be listed among the top backend languages like Java or Python in the coming years.

However, if we take a closer look at this ranking over the past few years, we may notice that Ruby always occupied a place around the top ten. This tendency continues. In my opinion, it is a sign that Ruby has an established strong position and credibility on the market. Like any programming language, it has its pros and cons. However, taking into account its flexibility, relatively short time of building web applications, irreplaceable Rails framework and dynamically developing community, I think that it offers very wide possibilities of building products.

Ruby on Rails

Take a look at the most important advantages of using Ruby on Rails:

  1. Ruby on Rails is great for building products in accordance with the MVP approach.
  2. The Ruby programming language facilitates the work of developers. It is possible thanks to the DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself) principle and Conversion over Configuration.
  3. It holds high standards of protection against the most popular web application attacks. It has a built-in protection against XSS, CSRF and SQL Injection attacks.
  4. Framework of Ruby on Rails allows programmers to create automated tests of selected code snippets.
  5. A very active community of Ruby developers positively affects the development of this language.
  6. Ruby provides great flexibility for changes introduced in the code.
  7. It is cost-saving. By reducing development time, it also reduces the costs of developers’ work.

I would like to highlight one more factor. Ruby is an exclusive language. Why? Let’s look at statistics. It is 12th in the Stack Overflow ranking in terms of popularity, but if we look at another ranking – showing the level of remuneration – we notice that Ruby is actually 6th. What such a difference? First of all, there are fewer developers available on the market, so finding a specialist is not easy. Second of all, I believe that a product built in Ruby is of high quality and that usually means higher costs.

Ruby on Rails project

Why can Ruby on Rails be used in various industries?

Ruby and its Ruby on Rails framework may be applied in almost all industries. You can use this technology to build and develop e-commerce products, marketplaces, adtech, proptech and SaaS solutions. You may have read more than once that such brands as Twitter, Basecamp or AirBnB have used Ruby. In this article, I would like to present to you a few less known but dynamically developing companies. They all represent various industries and use the Ruby language. Check them out!
