This interview with Adam Cosmas, CTO of PrimeTel PLC, explores the role of telecommunications in Cyprus’s digital transformation.
In our continuing series of interviews with industry leaders, today we have the privilege of speaking with Adam Cosmas , the CTO of PrimeTel PLC, one of Cyprus’s leading telecom providers. Guiding us through this conversation is Greg Polec , CEO &co-founder of The Codest and R&D expert.
Greg Polec (GP): Adam, could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us about your role as the CTO of PrimeTel PLC?
Adam Cosmas (AC) : Certainly, Greg. I’m Adam Cosmas, and as the CTO of PrimeTel PLC, I lead our technology strategy, pushing for innovation and development while ensuring our operations align with the evolving needs of our customers.
GP: Could you provide an overview of the current state of the telecommunication sector in Cyprus?
AC : Indeed, despite being a small nation, Cyprus has a robust and competitive telecommunications sector. We’re continuously striving to improve connectivity and digital services across the island, providing equal access to advanced telecom services for everyone.
GP: How would you describe the role of telecommunication in Cyprus’s overall digital transformation?
AC : Telecommunication acts as the backbone of Cyprus’s digital journey. We ensure reliable and fast internet access, enable digital services, and foster innovation. The role of telecom extends beyond providing services; we are the enablers of the digital economy.
GP: As a key player in the telecom sector, how is PrimeTel aiding Cyprus in its digital transformation journey?
AC: At PrimeTel, we aim to be more than just a service provider; we see ourselves as enablers of digital life. We’ve been focusing on improving our network infrastructure, introducing new services like IoT and cloud solutions, and partnering with various sectors to drive digital innovation.
GP: Can you highlight any technological advancements that have had a significant impact on this journey?
AC: Absolutely, the rollout of broadband networks has been a game-changer. It’s not just about faster speeds but also about enabling new use cases, like smart cities, real-time automation, and advanced AI applications, to name a few.
GP: What are some challenges that PrimeTel, or the broader telecom sector, have faced in facilitating Cyprus’s digital transformation?
AC: The journey hasn’t been without challenges. Significant investments, technological upgrades, and overcoming the digital divide are among the issues we’ve had to face. The Covid pandemic pushed us to develop all the necessary tools that allowed us to get on-board the customers in a contactless manner, while it was a great challenge in implementing our broadband expansions. At PrimeTel, our approach involves focusing on sustainable growth, leveraging partnerships, and always prioritising our customers’ needs.
GP: How has the regulatory environment in Cyprus affected the digital transformation efforts in the telecom sector?
AC: The regulatory environment has generally been supportive. That said, there’s always room for improvement. Harmonising our regulations with the EU Digital Single Market, for instance, could further accelerate our digital journey.
GP: How important are collaborations and partnerships in driving this digital transformation?
AC: Collaborations and partnerships are critical. By working together with tech companies, government bodies, and other stakeholders, we can create a holistic digital ecosystem. Our collaboration with local municipalities on smart city initiatives serves as a great example of this.
GP: Looking forward, what trends or technologies do you think will shape the future of the telecom sector and Cyprus’s digital transformation?
AC: Emerging trends like edge computing, AI, and the continued evolution of 5G are set to reshape the landscape. At PrimeTel, we aim to remain at the forefront of these
GP: Finally, could you share your advice for other leaders or organizations that are also on their digital transformation journey?
AC: Of course. My advice would be to embrace change, foster a culture of innovation, and always put the customer at the centre of your digital strategy. Digital transformation is not just about adopting new technologies; it’s also about changing the mindset and culture within the organization.
GP: Absolutely. Thank you for those insights, Cosmas. To conclude, could you share your vision for PrimeTel and the broader telecommunications sector in the coming years?
AC : I envision PrimeTel continuing to play a pivotal role in Cyprus’s digital transformation, leading the way in innovation and customer service.
