How to create a MVP in two months using Ruby?

MVP in two months using Ruby – a short story we have experienced at Codest.  Due to the fact that we specialize in the development of web applications and our main technology is Ruby, we received an inquiry from one of the companies about the possibility to cooperate in their product development. Nothing out of the ordinary. We get similar requests quite often.

However, it turned out that this time the request was quite differed from the other standard ones. The client had a challenge related to the rapid development of a web application based on MVP. Previously, they had decided to cooperate with a software house, but in the end, it did not work well. Without going into details, I would just mention that the roots of the problem laid in the efficiency and quality of work and the lack of timeliness. Our client decided to change it and find another partner. However, the biggest challenge was time. To be more precise – a complete lack of it.

Our cooperation began quite briefly. We were happy that they trusted us and saw a reliable partner in our company. But this is not the key point of the story. The client came to us with a ready vision of the project, but as a team of developers, we had to plan the rest. So we worked out a plan and got directly to work. In this project, time was of utmost importance, because the client expected us to do all the work during the month at best. It sounds unbelievable, right? I have to tell you right away that we were worried about whether to agree on this cooperation or not. The risk was really big. However, we decided that we would take it. We organized a team, delegated a Project Owner and started coding.

These were two months of intense cooperation, but today we do not regret anything at all. We were able to meet all the customer’s expectations. We provided them with a finished MVP product, which we will now develop according to further wishes. Of course, we still have a lot of work to do in terms of next functionalities and improvement of what already exists. As COO, I must add that we accepted this order so that we could check ourselves in “extreme” conditions – working under time pressure. I am really proud of my team as we managed.

In this project, we based on two technologies – Ruby on Rails (backend) and React/Vue.js. (frontend). The support of our UX team of designers was also necessary. When describing this situation now, I wonder how we even managed to succeed. In addition to the great professionals working on this project, communication within the team and with the client proved to be perfect. We also used Scrum, which allowed us to properly plan all work and have the time running under control.

This story is also a good example for all those, who are wondering what kind of technology to use in building a web application. Personally, I have always been a great supporter of Ruby, which in my opinion, is the most effective tool. Ruby also helps in situations similar to the one described above – when the speed of work counts.
