{"id":3780,"date":"2022-06-28T12:45:42","date_gmt":"2022-06-28T12:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the-codest.localhost\/blog\/two-reasons-you-should-not-use-php\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T05:57:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T05:57:55","slug":"twee-redenen-om-geen-php-te-gebruiken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/blog\/two-reasons-you-should-not-use-php\/","title":{"rendered":"Twee redenen om PHP niet te gebruiken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In de loop der jaren hebben veel mensen me gevraagd waarom ik de moeite neem <strong>programmeren in <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/how-to-hire-a-php-developer\/\">PHP<\/a><\/strong>en al vele jaren hoor ik als een mantra twee terugkerende argumenten waarom ik zou moeten stoppen en commerci\u00eble software zou moeten gaan schrijven in talen als <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/blog\/top-programming-languages-to-build-e-commerce\/\">Java<\/a> of C#.<br>\u200b<br>Vandaag ga ik die argumenten aanhalen en proberen je houding tegenover <strong>PHP<\/strong> tenminste een beetje. Ja, de titel van dit artikel is een absurde clickbait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176123016-0c45e1e9-5c0a-48f2-ae4a-54d8960003a1.png\" alt=\"afbeelding\"><br>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 PHP is stervende<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br><strong>PHP<\/strong> sterft jaar na jaar af. De ooit populairste <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/blog\/find-your-ideal-stack-for-web-development\/\">web<\/a> taal verliest nu maand na maand aan populariteit, voornamelijk aan <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/why-is-javascript-so-popular\/\">JavaScript<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Als je de cijfers bekijkt, is de waarheid ontnuchterend! In het afgelopen jaar, <strong>PHP<\/strong> verloor maar liefst 1,6% van zijn aandeel als de backend-taal van het web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Als <strong>PHP<\/strong> zet deze neerwaartse trend voort, in 18 jaar <strong>PHP<\/strong> zal dalen tot onder 50% van de backend webtechnologie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176105714-fc5c2c57-6ae2-445a-a133-ac06f3125b2d.png\" alt=\"Historische trends in de gebruiksstatistieken van server-side programmeertalen voor websites\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Maar ok\u00e9, grapjes terzijde - hoewel de cijfers echt zijn <a href=\"https:\/\/w3techs.com\/technologies\/history_overview\/programming_language\" rel=\"nofollow\">zoals gemeld door W3CTechs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De eerste vermelding die <strong>PHP<\/strong> is stervende is sinds 2013 op het web te vinden. Destijds Software Gunslinger <a href=\"https:\/\/softwaregunslinger.tumblr.com\/post\/47131406821\/php-is-meant-to-die\" rel=\"nofollow\">een artikel gepubliceerd<\/a> (die ik overigens ten zeerste aanbeveel!) die zegt dat PHP zal sterven omdat het geen langlevende processen ondersteunt en omdat het asynchroniciteit mist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>En dat is een feit, <strong>PHP<\/strong> was daar niet voor gemaakt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>als je alleen een hamer hebt, lijkt alles op een spijker<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Maar terug naar de cijfers - laten we eens kijken naar vorig jaar <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/blog\/app-data-collection-security-risks-value-and-types-explored\/\">gegevens<\/a> op <strong>PHP<\/strong> versies gebruikt in Packagist-pakketten. De nieuwste gegevens zijn beschikbaar op de bronsite <a href=\"https:\/\/packagist.org\/php-statistics\" rel=\"nofollow\">packagist.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176107004-6c0b6061-ff6b-4fcd-a6e0-3cdec01fd411.png\" alt=\"Pakketinstallaties door PHP kleine versiegrafiek\" title=\"Pakketinstallaties door PHP kleine versie\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Is dit de adoptiecurve voor nieuwe versies van een stervende programmeertaal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Als dat nog niet genoeg is, laten we dan ons \"PHP sterftecijfer\" vergelijken met andere talen.<br>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De gegevens voor de analyse zijn afkomstig van<a href=\"https:\/\/madnight.github.io\/githut\/#\/pushes\/2022\/1\" rel=\"nofollow\">GitHut 2.0<\/a>die een grafiek genereert van het aantal <code>git push<\/code> per taal naar Github sinds 2012, volgens het schema - \"De verdeling van het taalpercentage in de lijngrafiek toont de top 10 (of handmatig geselecteerde) talen sinds 2012\/Q2\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176108444-c68dce87-ba23-4ab5-92de-5fdc961ca0f0.png\" alt=\"programmeertaal procentuele verdelingsgrafiek\" title=\"procentuele verdeling programmeertaal \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Zoals je kunt zien <strong>PHP<\/strong> evenals andere populaire talen zoals <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/case-studies\/providing-a-team-of-ruby-developers-for-a-fintech-company\/\">Ruby<\/a>C\/C++, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/what-is-python-good-for\/\">Python<\/a> hebben de afgelopen jaren een aanzienlijke daling in populariteit op Github doorgemaakt, maar er is een opwaartse trend en we verwachten dat ze na een langere zijwaartse periode weer een hoge positie zullen innemen. <em>(dit is geen beleggingsadvies)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>De eerste <code>hype<\/code> voor de Javascript taal is te zien in dezelfde grafiek. De conclusies en de analyse laat ik aan jou, beste lezer, over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176109091-38a63b8f-e240-4c98-9ce6-27fb6f77e5c0.png\" alt=\"afbeelding\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Maar ja, een uitstervende taal zou het aantal vacatures voor programmeurs niet moeten verhogen, toch?<br>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176109644-6e80387f-dbfb-4f87-b910-c59ee23de450.png\" alt=\"afbeelding\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Op het moment dat ik dit artikel schrijf, kan ik kiezen uit 171 vacatures op een van de grootste vacatureportalen in Nederland. <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/blog\/the-codest-guide-how-to-successfully-outsource-from-poland\/\">Polen<\/a>waarvan maar liefst 50 voor junioren. <strong>PHP<\/strong> is stervende, toch?<br>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176115563-64e70819-b525-4071-a19d-bac019b4cd28.png\" alt=\"PHP meme - php is stervende \" title=\"PHP is stervende meme \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>En over geld gesproken... wist je dat <strong>PHP<\/strong> en zijn bron <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/what-is-code-refactoring\/\">code<\/a> wordt sinds november 2021 onderhouden door de <em>onafhankelijk Open Source<\/em> gemeenschap<a href=\"https:\/\/opencollective.com\/phpfoundation#category-ABOUT\" rel=\"nofollow\">De Stichting PHP<\/a> die <strong>betaalt veel geld<\/strong> aan OpenSource-ontwikkelaars voor bijdragen aan <code>php-src<\/code>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In tegenstelling tot andere talen en frameworks, die vaak eigendom zijn van grote bedrijven, is de kern van de ontwikkeling <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/how-to-lead-software-development-team\/\">team<\/a> wordt rechtstreeks betaald uit de rekening van de stichting die wordt gerund door bijdragen van particuliere bedrijven zoals JetBrains en Symfony Corp, maar ook door<a href=\"https:\/\/opencollective.com\/phpfoundation#category-CONTRIBUTE\" rel=\"nofollow\">kleine bijdragen van individuele ontwikkelaars<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open Source in al zijn glorie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 PHP is vreselijk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ja, dit argument komt altijd uit de mond van ontwikkelaars die bekend zijn geraakt met sterk getypte, vergelijkbare talen.<br>\u200b<br>Als je kijkt naar de grafiek van gegevens die zijn verzameld tijdens de<a href=\"https:\/\/insights.stackoverflow.com\/survey\/2021#most-loved-dreaded-and-wanted\" rel=\"nofollow\">StackOverflow onderzoek<\/a> van 2021 kun je zien dat maar liefst 10.834 respondenten, wat neerkomt op bijna 60% van het totaal, PHP \"vreselijk\" vonden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/176115975-3c189a18-0ee4-4cc7-87f2-9315c08e4518.png\" alt=\"afbeelding\"><br>\u200b<br>Als een ouderwetse <strong>PHP programmeur<\/strong>Ik begrijp waarom dit zo is. Ik moet meteen denken aan een klassiek voorbeeld van geheugenproblemen in <strong>PHP<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code lang=\"php\" class=\"language-php\"><strong>&lt;?php<\/strong>\n\nklasse FOO {\n  openbaar $f;\n}\n\nklasse BAR {\n  public $f;\n}\n\nwhile(1) {\n  $a = nieuwe FOO();\n  $b = nieuwe BAR();\n  $a-&gt;f = $b;\n  $b-&gt;f = $a;\n  print \"Geheugengebruik: \" . number_format(memory_get_usage(true)) . \" bytesn\";\n  unset($a);\n  unset($b);\n}<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Voor de niet-ingewijden - ja, de bovenstaande code veroorzaakt een geheugenfout. En er is meer. Van de idiote naamgeving van methoden en het complete gebrek aan logica in de volgorde van hun parameters (ja, we houden allemaal van <code>str_<\/code> en <code>matrix_<\/code>) tot de beroemdste bug van PHP <code>T_PAAMAYIM_NEKOEDOTAYIM<\/code> - PHP zit vol eigenaardigheden en ondeugden van oude versies. Dit betekent niet dat wat we hoorden over <strong>PHP<\/strong> een paar jaar geleden is nog steeds waar. De taal heeft een enorme metamorfose ondergaan en vandaag kijk ik met plezier naar mijn objectdefinities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code lang=\"php\" class=\"language-php\">readonly klasse Kennisgevinggebeurtenis\n{\n    publieke functie __construct(\n        openbare string $context,\n        openbare gebruiker $user,\n        openbare string $body,\n        public DateTime $issuedAt,\n    ) {}\n}<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Bovendien is de <strong>PHP ecosysteem<\/strong> is enorm gegroeid en we hebben nu ongelooflijke mogelijkheden om goede, zeer getypeerde en goed geteste code te maken. We kunnen <strong>Symfony<\/strong> \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/CodelyTV\/php-ddd-example\" rel=\"nofollow\">om DDD-toepassingen te ontwikkelen<\/a> zonder grote problemen en we kunnen het probleem van de synchroniciteit van PHP omzeilen door Message Bus te gebruiken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En hoewel ik zelf niet denk dat <strong>PHP<\/strong> geschikt is voor het maken van langlevende backendprocessen en enorme prestatieproblemen heeft als het gaat om statussynchronisatie, heb ik ook<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/sebastianluczak\/php-roguelike\" rel=\"nofollow\">een PHP consolegame gemaakt<\/a> met Symfony + <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/docker-developer\/\">Docker<\/a> met mijn eigen handen als voorbeeld dat PHP nog steeds onconventionele toepassingen kan hebben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Nog een <strong>voordeel van PHP<\/strong> is de lage instapdrempel voor nieuwe ontwikkelaars. Documentaties van twee populaire frameworks Symfony en<a href=\"https:\/\/laravel.com\/docs\/9.x\/installation\" rel=\"nofollow\">Laravel<\/a> en <strong>PHP<\/strong> documentatie zelf zijn voldoende om met hun hulp de backendwereld binnen te gaan. Een wereld die niet perfect is in PHP, maar veel mogelijk maakt. Met behulp van extra bibliotheken zoals <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/blog\/advantages-of-laravel-services-for-your-business\/\">Laravel<\/a> Nova is in staat om bijna elk onderdeel van ons systeem te maken met slechts twee commando's.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">nagenieten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<br>Is <strong>PHP<\/strong> stervende?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nee, maar het heeft een imagoprobleem en er is veel werk nodig om het te verbeteren. Wij, de programmeurs, moeten dit werk doen door de nieuwe generatie te onderwijzen en best practices door te geven in de vorm van artikelen, bibliotheken en tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Als taal die op de <a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/nl\/dictionary\/what-is-the-size-of-your-potential-reachable-market\/\">markt<\/a> al twintig jaar, die al meer dan \u00e9\u00e9n <code>hype<\/code> (Herinner je je Objective-C?) Ik denk dat het zich wel zal redden en zijn niche zal vinden.<br>\u200b<br>En wie weet, misschien kloppen mijn voorspellingen wel en is PHP 10.x over twee jaar weer booming?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thecodest.co\/contact\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/interested_in_cooperation_.png\" alt=\"vaandel samenwerking\"\/><\/a><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Als PHP ontwikkelaar herinner ik me nog de dagen van PHP4, de eerste (optionele!)
