It’s no longer just about the additional features and a good price, it's about the functionality and the looks. The users want to feel pleasure while using the application, admire its appealing design and be attracted to the overall experience.
It doesn't matter if you are a product designer, a software developer, a marketing manager or a business owner, in order to create the best product, you must be aware of what should be done during the product design process. Here is a comprehensive checklist you might want to dive in and learn more!
The Design Thinking approach
The ‘Design Thinking’ method regards the real function of the product design process. This concept was initially developed by Tim Brown of IDEO. Design thinking gathered millions of enthusiasts around the world as it ably compressed all the human-centered ideas and designs into a single concept. It makes the process well-structured and less time-consuming.
The whole process of design thinking methodology consists of 5 major steps – emphasizing, definition, ideation, prototyping and testing. As we mentioned previously, most of the product design processes are based on this methodology which is why our list below also transmits the spirit of design thinking. Define the product vision
Undoubtedly, one of the most crucial steps of product design starts before the real ‘work’. Planning and defining the aim of the product will allow you to understand the context of your idea and help you explore the vision of the product better. This step should be realized thoroughly as you definitely want your teammates to feel the real flow of the product to create the best work.
Research similar products
You can never research enough! This phase will provide you with the valuable information about similar products, needed characteristics of a product type and a wider frame of what can potentially become your competition. A proper research will allow you to understand the customers’ needs in a much more efficient way and create suitable features of your soon-to-exist product.
Conduct user analysis
This part aims at answering all questions related to end users’ goals and tasks. This is when you meet your target group and learn what is most important to them. User-centered analysis will allow you to build more profitable products or even launch them faster onto the market. How is that possible? Accurate observations can positively impact your decision-making process as you learn what is crucial for the customers and what is not.
Designers would usually generate ideas during sessions, such as during brainstorming meetings, five why analyses, 6-3-5 method and many more. The key to making this step successful is to fully address the problem, invite open-minded people to your team and create a judgment-free environment where everybody could get beyond the limits of their imagination.
This where all the previous steps merge into one. All of the data, conclusions and ideas are now ready to be put into existence. Make sure to navigate the process well and go according to the plan by taking into account all the previous observations.
Test and validate
Test your product and improve it until it suits your requirements and plans. This step is often underestimated as if running a few quick tests is enough – which is not true. Take your time and thoroughly run more tests since you don’t want a failed start when entering the market. The vision of finally finishing the project is tempting but stay patient!
When speaking about product design, we often forget about post-launch maintenance and support of the product. This can be extremely crucial, especially in terms of MVPs. The fact that your product has been launched onto the market does not mean that you can completely forget about it and just collect the profit.
Keep collecting feedback and develop the product! To make it work, create a dedicated maintenance and monitoring team that will offer support and make sure that your application delivers top-quality services.
We hope that our little checklist with the most crucial and major steps will come in handy and allow you to launch the product of your dreams! Remember to stay patient, test and research well to put your customers’ needs first.
